Sydney is the capital of New South Wales. Located in the southeast of Australia, New South Wales is a mix of rainforests, vineyards and mountains. The region offers skiing in the snowy mountains, city nightlife and watersports on the sunny coast. Sydney is warm (15 ° C to 20 ° C) in winter, which is from June to August, and hot (25 ° C to 30 ° C or so) in summer.

Sydney is a huge city, some 70km by 55km, and inhabited by 4 million people. It is primarily famous for the harbour and the opera house located there.

Accommodation and Food

In such a huge and cosmopolitan city, a range of accommodation is readily available. Many hotels are located in the city centre or in districts close to it.

There is no shortage of places to eat, either. For something a little unusual, how about dinner in the 300-metre tall Sydney Tower. The tower features a revolving restaurant overlooking the sights of the city?

Things to Do

The Sydney Opera House is one of the most famous buildings in the world, but don't settle for just seeing it. You can take a tour or have a meal in one of several restaurants within the building. There are also shops to browse through. Or you might decide to take in a performance.

New South Wales has some excellent beaches. Bondi is the most famous, and not just for the surf. Bondi beach now features a number of excellent restaurants. The longest beach in Sydney is Cronolla, where you can take a walk among the cliffs, coves and tide pools. Manly beach has the Oceanworld Aquarium. Other beaches have their own attractions and all share the marvelous Australian climate.

There is plenty to do at the beaches besides soak up the rays. For the more active holidaymaker there is surfing, sailing, windsurfing, jet skis and swimming. A more leisurely alternative is a cruise or boat trip. All manner of vessels are available including a replica of HMS Bounty, paddle steamers and luxurious modern yachts.

Sydney has many museums and historic buildings such as Hyde Park Barracks, St John's Cathedral and Elizabeth Bay House. Most date from the early days of colonization and show how people lived in those early days. If all that culture gets too much for you, there are numerous shopping malls to explore, such as the shopping & leisure complex at Darling Harbour. The complex includes an IMAX theatre. Another good complex is Star City, which has a theatre, restaurants, hotel and a casino. For the kids, there is the indoor theme park at Sega World

Sydney also features several wildlife sanctuaries and parks including the Australian Wildlife Park and Sydney Aquarium. Much of Australia's wildlife is totally unique and the parks offer a chance to see it close up and in natural surroundings.

Away from the central region of Sydney, there is a different set of attractions. North of the city at the mouth of the Hawkesbury River lies the Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park. Walk or ride a horse among the coves and cliffs and seek out Aboriginal rock carvings. There are other attractions on the Hawkesbury River including watersports. Alternatively you can join the postman on his boat and deliver mail to residents along the river whilst taking in the sights of the waterway.

The towns of Windsor and Richmond to the northwest of Sydney are popular with visitors who want to see what old Australia looked like. Windsor is the oldest town in Australia and Richmond retains much of its early architecture. Alternatively, head south to Audley in the Royal National Park and hire a boat to explore the Hacking River.
