Located at the southernmost tip of the Sinai Peninsula, Sharm el Sheik is a coastal resort popular with divers and watersports fans.

Forming a bridge between Africa and Eurasia, the Sinai region has had an important role in world history. Crossed by Moses and the Israelites and mined for gold and turquoise by the Pharaohs, Sinai is a region of stark contrasts and great natural beauty. In the north lie the beaches and resorts of the Mediterranean coast. In the south is the 'Red Sea Riviera'. Between them is starkly beautiful desert and mountains dominated by Mount Sinai.

Sharm el Sheik is part of the South Sinai Governate, whose capital is at Al-Tor. Sharm el Sheik is increasing in popularity every year. The climate is warm to hot all year round, with plenty of sunshine. Note that while hot-weather clothing is acceptable in most areas, some religious sites require long trousers and shoulders to be covered as a mark of respect.

The resort is in two parts. The southern section overlooks the port, while most of the watersports on offer are located in the northern area. Night life centres mainly around shorefront bars and restaurants, though there are several discos and night clubs available.

Accommodation and Food

Sharm el Sheik has a range of accommodation available to suit all budgets. Hotels range from large, modern complexes to much smaller, more intimate facilities. Many hotels have a jetty allowing divers access to the waters without damaging the coral.

The resort is very cosmopolitan, and international cuisine is readily available.

Activities

Sharm el Sheik offers a range of watersports, of which diving is the most important. Snorkelling and scuba diving are both very popular in the warm waters of the Red Sea. The resort has several dive schools within easy reach, and offers a range of dives from novice to expert level. Divers can observe manta rays and dolphins as well as a spectacular range of coral and tropical fish.

Shoppers have plenty to choose from. Local markets are particularly good places to bargain for clothing, books, pottery, leather and ornamental goods, while there are several shopping malls with a wide variety of international goods for sale.

The region has a great deal to offer those seeking a bit of culture and history. At the foot of Mount Sinai is St Catherine's monastery. St Catherine was the daughter of a ruler of Alexandria who was tortured for converting to Christianity. There are also several historic fortresses in the region.

For nature lovers, the Ras Mohammed National Park is located 50km to Sharm el Sheik. It contains both land and sea attractions including spectacular scenery and rare marine life. The coast is a popular location for divers.

Visitors might like to take a trip to the oasis of Uyun Mussa, or to the resort of Dahah, about 80km from Sharm el Sheik. Dahah offers watersports and diving in addition to excellent beaches. Desert safaris are also on offer, or you can ride horses and camels.
