Aghios Nikolaos is built on the site of the ancient town of Lato towards Ka-mara, a seaport of Lato Hetera. It flourished throughout the 3rd century BC and continued to nourish during the Roman and early Byzantine periods. The city has an Archaeological Museum, with a large collection of Minoan artefacts. The museum is home to finds from the cemetery of Aghia Photia, dating back to 2,300 BC, including more than 1,500 vases. The museum also has the skull of a young Roman athlete wearing a gold olive-leaf wreath dated to the 1st century AD.

Aghios Nikolaos is host to many restaurants and Greek tavernas, serving up typical healthy Greek dishes with ingredients such as bread accommpanied by olives, lots of fresh fruit and raw vegetables, olive oil, red wine and foods rich in protein, in the form of goat's milk, cheese, walnuts and fish. Lamb, chicken, pork and steaks cooked on a charcoal-grill are also quite common.
