Kos is the third largest of the Greek Dodecanese islands, and shares their excellent, sunny climate. The island is very popular with holidaymakers. It offers a mix of nightlife and quiet beauty that will appeal to everyone. The local currency is the Euro.
Kos has been inhabited since prehistoric times when the Minoans, Achaeans and Dorians built their towns and cities. The island was the birthplace of Hippocrates, father of medicine. Later, the island was influenced by the Romans, Venetians and Crusaders. These civilisations have all left behind traces of their culture.
The international airport (Hippocrates) is about 27km from Kos Town. Flights come in year-round from Athens and in summer from other European cities.
There are several resorts on Kos, each with unique characteristics.
Kos Town is the capital of Kos. It is the main harbour on Kos, overlooked by the castle of the Knights of St John. Boat trips from the port are popular. Destinations include Kalymnos and Rhodes.
Kos Town itself still shows signs of the various cultures that influenced its development. The remains of Roman baths and an amphitheatre can still be seen in town. The town has been extensively developed in recent years, with new facilities and apartment complexes growing up along the coast to north and south. The beach at Kos Town is not especially good, but there are better ones just a short bus ride away.
Kardamena lies on the southern side of the island. It is one of the best-known and liveliest resorts on the island and is popular as a party-holiday destination. The original fishing village has largely disappeared under modern developments, though the harbour and village square remain. Kardamena boasts some excellent beaches with clear waters ideal for swimming and watersports. The beaches get very crowded near the resort but the crowds thin as you move further out.
Kefalos is a quiet village set on a hillside above a sand and pebble beach. The resort is more relaxed than some others on the island, with fairly low-key nightlife. The beach has a good range of watersports available and is good for children.
Marmari is an ideal place to get away from it all and have a relaxed, laid-back holiday. It is only 12km from Kos Town but is much quieter even in the high season. The beach has a good selection of watersports and is especially popular for windsurfing.
Mastihari lies to the south of Marmari. The resort has grown up around a traditional fishing village and has an attractive harbour lined with tavernas. Mastihari is a quiet and relaxing place to spend your holiday.
Tingaki is another quiet resort with low-key nightlife. It is close enough to Kos Town to allow you to visit when you fancy a bit more excitement, then retreat to the quieter surroundings on Tingaki to escape from the bustle. The beach has a good range of watersports on offer.
Accommodation and Food
Kos does not receive quite so many visitors as Rhodes, but all the same it has several resorts catering to large numbers of visitors. There is no shortage of accommodation. Apartments, studios and a range of hotels are available to suit all budgets. Many hotels and complexes have their own swimming pool and other extras such as sports facilities.
Kos has plenty of places to eat, serving dishes ranging from fast food to traditional Greek cuisine. Kos is the greenest of the Dodecanese islands, producing plenty of excellent fresh vegetables and fruits. Everyone has heard of Kos lettuce, but that's just the beginning. With these first-class ingredients it is no surprise that local cuisine is truly excellent.
Kos also produces a range of red and white wines as well as fruit spirits.
Activities
Kos Town hosts the only museum on the island; the Archeological Museum of Kos. The museum displays a range of artefacts including mosaics and statues dating from ancient and Roman times. Find out how these important civilisations made their mark on the ancient Mediterranean world.
Kos also has some very impressive churches and other religious buildings, some dating from as early as the 5 th Century. Not only are they interesting in their own right, these places are an ideal location for a peaceful or romantic walk, offering relaxation away from the bustle of the resorts.
A good way to see the island is to hire a bicycle and tour wherever you like. There are over 4000 bicycles available, so finding one should not be a problem. Head into the interior of the island and explore the peaceful villages and lush greens of the spectacular scenery, or look for souvenirs and gifts. Kos produces excellent local pottery and hand-woven rugs.
In Kos Town you can visit the Castle of the Knights, constructed in the 14 th Century by the Knights of St John, or play a variety of sports. There are also plenty of opportunities for socialising. Spend a pleasant afternoon drinking coffee in a café and watching the world go by, or party all night in one of the many nightclubs.
Just outside Kos Town is the Asklepion, once a religious sanctuary and centre of medicine drawing on the teachings of Hippocrates himself. This is the main archeological site on the island and contains remains from the Roman, Classical Greek and Doric periods dating from the 4 th Century BC to the first Century AD.
Kos offers a range of watersports including water skiing, paragliding and wind surfing, and there is a scuba diving centre for those wanting to take advantage of the clear Mediterranean waters.
