Lake Maggiore is a long, fairly narrow body of water twisting for 60km from Sesto Calende in the south to Locarno in the north. The lake, which is extremely deep and is the second largest in Italy, winds form Lombardy through Piedmont up to Switzerland. In it lie the Borromean islands while on the shores there are many small towns and resorts. Due to the surrounding hills and mountains, the climate is sheltered and pleasant.

Locarno, in the north, is an old town located on the lakeshore. It has many historic attractions and a lovely backdrop of vine-covered hills. Stresa, halfway down the lake, offers the chance to take a boat trip out to the beautiful Borromean Islands as well as its own gardens and fascinating architecture. In the south, the town of Arona is an important road and rail junction as well as a popular tourist destination since Roman times. The town has many fascinating historic attractions.

Accommodation And Food

The towns around Lake Maggiore have a range of hotels and other accommodation available. In some cases a car is necessary as the hotel is a little way outside of town. Facilities such as pools and air conditioning are not universal, but there is sufficient variety that you will be able to find what you want. Alternatives to hotels include apartments, farmhouses offering accommodation and camp sites.

Italian cuisine is wonderful. Many people are only familiar with pizza and pasta dishes, but there are some delights awaiting discovery if you wish to be a little more adventurous. Particularly good are Agnello Saporito, a lamb dish, and Pollo Milanese which is essentially fried breadcrumbed chicken. If you get the chance, try Limoncello, a lemon liqueur.

As well as traditional Italian food, international cuisine is readily available. Each town has its own selection of restaurants and cafes to choose from.

Activities

The Italian Lakes offer a range of opportunities for watersports, though what is on offer does depend on where you stay. For the more energetic visitor there is sailing, windsurfing, diving and swimming. If you prefer to relax then a boat trip on the lake is ideal.

If you have an interest in history, the town of Arona has many attractions including churches dating from early Christian times and later buildings. Meina is also a site of historical interest, having been inhabited since the Bronze Age. Sports fans will like Cannobio, which has minigolf, tennis, athletics and shooting on offer as well as sailing and swimming.

All of the resorts on the lake offer a range of shopping and nightlife, which vary from place to place. As a rule, the region is more geared to relaxing family or romantic holidays than to constant partying, though there are some good bars and clubs if you look for them. The best shopping is to be had in Riva del Garda and Malcesine, unless you feel like a trip to one of the big cites.

To get the most from Lake Maggiore, it is worth visiting the various towns and villages to see what they have on offer. The best way to do this is to take a boat trip on the lake, stopping off wherever takes your fancy.
