Venice lies on the northeast coast of Italy at the north end of the Adriatic Sea. The city is famous for its canals plied by gondolas and waterbuses. It has a long history as one of the most powerful of the Italian maritime states, though its age of dominance over much of the Mediterranean is long past. The city is made up of over a hundred small islands and is slowly sinking into the sea

Venice gets busy and expensive in spring and early summer. It can be very hot at the height of summer and tends to be a little quieter. In winter, some hotels close and others offer lower rates. The city can be very cold in winter but it is quiet.

Accommodation and Food

Venice has large numbers of hotels and apartments, which tend to get rather full in the high season. Booking in advance is wise unless you go at a quiet time of year. One alternative to expensive hotels is to rent a sleep-aboard boat, solving the problems of accommodation and transport in one stroke. Self-catering in an apartment is much cheaper than a hotel, and gives you a chance to really experience Venice as you shop in the markets alongside the locals.

Venice has a wide range of cuisine on offer, but it pays to be a little bit careful when selecting somewhere to eat. A good guide is to look where the locals like to go. Try not to be persuaded to go into a restaurant by the staff, and always insist on a written bill. If you want to eat cheaply, pizzerias and some bars are a good option. Upmarket restaurants tend to be excellent but expensive.

Activities

If you go to Venice, you really need to see St Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco). The Basilica of St Mark, where the remains of the Apostle Mark are housed, is located there along with many beautiful buildings and numerous coffee houses. The Palazzo Ducale, overlooking the square, is another must-see. A Gothic building in pink and white, the palace was for centuries the political centre of the city and of Venetian power.

Many of the canal bridges have become famous over the years. You can see them on foot or from the water. Gondolas tend to be very expensive but the water buses (Vaporetti) are good value. Self-drive boats are also available.

Venice has many excellent collections of art. The Galleria dell' Accademia contains works by several famous artists. There are many other fine galleries and museums to explore. This might be particularly attractive in the winter when it is cold and damp outside.

If for some reason you feel the need to go outside the city of Venice, you might like to visit the great houses of the Riviera del Brenta. Some are open to the public; others are private residences. Further up the Brenta is Bassano del Grappa, source of a rather interesting liquor, Grappa, and also for ceramics. Bassano del Grappa is a good base from which to visit the small towns around the area.

The small city of Treviso is worthy of a day trip and makes a good stopover if you want to explore further north. Alternatively, a visit to Vicenza or Verona is not too far afield and well worth the trip.
