Holidays in Benidorm

Spain Main Guide | Costa Blanca Main Guide

Benidorm lies on the Costa Blanca ('White Coast') of Spain. It is the largest resort in the Mediterranean. Nestling between the mountains to the north and the sea to the south, Benidorm has warm winters and hot summers. The average temperature varies between 18-19ºC in winter to 33ºC or more in summer.

The resort has two main beaches, which are popular (which can mean 'crowded') with tourists. A third beach can be reached through the old town or the harbour. A number of quiet and secluded coves offer more privacy for those that prefer it. Benidorm Island, in the bay, is a bird and marine reserve.

The Old Quarter of Benidorm stands on the promontory between the two main beaches. It retains much of the feeling of the traditional fishing village that Benidorm was before the tourist expansion. A weekly market takes [place on Wednesday, offering a variety of goods with Spanish and African influences. The New Town also has a market, on Sundays.

Benidorm plays host to a range of events in the open-air amphitheatre (or indoors during cooler months) in the impressive Aiguera Park.

Inland can be found beautiful scenery dotted with historic villages. The city of Valencia, third largest in Spain is not far to the north. Valencia offers shopping plus centuries of history and culture. There is a Moorish castle and other historic attractions at Guadelest

Accommodation and Food

Most of the accommodation in Benidorm is in the form of apartments and hotels. However, if you are willing to stay a little outside the resort there is an array of self-catering accommodation available in nearby villages, offering access to the resort but still acting as a safe haven away from the bustle.

Hotels offer a range of features, though pools and air conditioning are both fairly standard. Distance from the beaches varies between a stone's throw and almost a kilometre. Air conditioning is less standard in apartments, though most complexes do have a pool.

Activities

It would be impossible to go to Benidorm and not partake of the delights of sea and sand. The coast offers a number of other possibilities too, including water skiing, windsurfing, banana boats, scuba diving and snorkelling. Boat trips to Benidorm Island are popular, especially those with glass bottoms.

Excursions are available aboard a range of vehicles. 4 x 4 can be hired, with or without a driver, as well as motorcycles. Alternatively, horseback trips up the Algar river, catering to experts and beginners alike, offer a chance to experience the countryside close-up.

The Terra Mitica theme park in Benidorm's town centre offers rides and attractions based on ancient Mediterranean cultures. It is only open at the weekend and local holidays however. Also in the town centre is the Aqualandia water park, which has a range of death-defying and more sedate water rides and slides in addition to shops and restaurants. The Mundomar Marine park offers water-based attractions of a different sort with a dolphin show, animals and birds.

For something a bit different, you can drink and eat dinner whilst watching medieval knights engaging in a traditional medieval tournament, complete with jesters and entertainers.
