Costa Blanca, meaning 'White Coast', lies on the south-eastern Mediterranean coast of Spain. The region is known for its mild winters and hot summers. Average temperatures range from 17-19ēC in winter to 30ēC or more in summer. The region gets around 300 days of sunshine a year.

The Costa Blanca runs from Denia in the north almost to Cartagena in the south. It contains several popular coastal resorts and many towns and cities, served by main roads along the coast and heading inland. The main city in the area is Alicante, which gives its name to the district. This in turn forms part of the Valencian Community region.

The main holiday destinations in Costa Blanca are Alicante, Benidorm and Denia.

Alicante is not a particularly huge city, with a population of about 300,000. As the regional capital it has a cosmopolitan feel whilst retaining its traditional Spanish charm. Alicante is not an expensive place to take a holiday but offers a wide range of shopping, eating and drinking opportunities alongside culture and a history which dates back to prehistoric times.

Much of Alicante's architecture shows Gothic and Moorish influences, reflecting the varied history of the region. The city plays host to a number of festivals throughout the year and has a vibrant nightlife. To the south of Alicante lies a region of dune-bordered beaches with many fine golf courses.

Benidorm is the largest resort in the Mediterranean. It has two main beaches and several smaller ones. Benidorm Island, in the bay, is a bird and marine reserve. The Old Quarter of Benidorm stands on the promontory between the two main beaches. It retains much of the feeling of the traditional fishing village that Benidorm was before the tourist expansion. A weekly market takes [place on Wednesday, offering a variety of goods with Spanish and African influences. The New Town also has a market, on Sundays. Benidorm plays host to a range of events in the open-air amphitheatre (or indoors during cooler months) in the impressive Aiguera Park.

Denia is a major tourist resort which caters mainly to those wanting a quieter, relaxing holiday. It boasts a number of historic attractions including a 17-century church. Ferries to Ibiza, Palma de Mallorca and Oran can be caught at the port.

La Cala de Finestrat is a smaller resort just south of Benidorm. It is a lot quieter and caters mainly to families. For those wanting a bit more vibrancy, Benidorm is easily close enough to visit before returning to relax away from the bustle.

Food and Drink

International cuisine is available in most larger communities throughout the region. Even some very small villages have a Chinese or Indian restaurant among the more traditional buildings. Tapas and other Spanish specialities are available everywhere, along with more unusual dishes showing a North African influence.
