Holidays in Costa Teguise

Spain Main Guide | Lanzarote Main Guide

Costa Teguise lies on the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Isles. Lanzarote is best known for its incredible volcanic landscape plus excellent weather and first-class beaches. The northern side of Lanzarote boasts several amazing natural spectacles such as the volcanic caves at Cueva de los Verdes and the Fire Mountains, a group of volcanoes and lava fields. The strangely beautiful landscape has been described as resembling the surface of the moon, and has inspired a number of unique developments. The most famous is the Jameos del Agua, a landscaped underground garden.

Costa Teguise is the longest-established resort on Lanzarote, though not the largest. It is relatively quiet when compared with, say, Puerto de Carmen. Lying less than 10km from the airport and the capital at Arrecife, the resort is popular with holidaymakers seeking excellent beaches and endless sunshine.

The resort was purpose-built to fit in with the local countryside. It consists mainly of attractive low, white buildings with shutters painted in cheerful colours.

Night life tends to be fairly sedate. Costa Teguise is a place to relax over a good meal and a glass of wine rather than party the night away. There is a good selection of bars and restaurants on offer, all the same. Nearby Puerto del Carmen is much more of a party town and has a range of bars and discos on offer. The nightlife is considerably more upbeat than in Costa Teguise.

Accommodation and Food

Costa Teguise offers a range of apartments and hotels of varying sizes. Apartments are available with 4 or more bedrooms for large families or parties. In most hotels and restaurants associated with them, long trousers are required at dinner for gentlemen.

Costa Teguise has a variety of eating places offering international choices in addition to Spanish tapas. Pizza, Chinese and Mexican food is available, and for those in a hurry the resort has a few fast-food outlets. Seafood is very popular on the island, often served with a distinctive local 'mojo' sauce. For a truly unique eating experience, take a trip to the Fire Mountains and enjoy a barbeque cooked over a volcanic outlet.

Activities

Costa Teguise is a place to relax and stroll on the beaches – or soak up the sun. The region around the Papagayo Peninsula has a number of secluded coves popular with those preferring to get a tan in private – or all over.

For those who just can't keep still there is plenty of choice. Watersports are popular, with windsurfing and scuba diving schools in town. Golf is also a popular choice, with an 18-hole golf course 2km from the resort.

Sunday is market day in Costa Teguise. The goods on offer range from local ceramics to cloth goods, and folk dances are performed in the town square by dancers dressed in traditional costume.

There is culture aplenty to be found on Lanzarote. Inland can be found many traditional Canarian villages and towns. One such is Teguise, once the capital of the island. Today it is little more than a village, but the archaic buildings and weekly market are worth a look.

Less than 10km from the resort lies the town of Tahiche. Tahiche is the home of the Manrique Foundation, dedicated to the works of the landscape artist Cesar Manrique.

Manrique's house is partially underground, using part of a network of volcanic caves. The Foundation is home to a number of pieces of Picasso's work as well as Manrique's. Manrique also created a number of monuments which can be seen around the island.

Lanzarote can at first seem dry and desolate, but in fact it has its very own natural charm. The locals practice a very unusual kind of farming which involves creating a crescent-shaped pit filled with volcanic ash. These 'Zocos' are used to grow vines, and from their produce comes a distinctive sweet wine.

About 40km from Costa Teguise lies Timanfaya National Park, where visitors can experience the incredible volcanic wilderness close-up. In the north of the island lies Guatiza, home to a cactus garden designed by Cesar Manrique. Blending nature with art, the garden has over 1000 species of cactus.
