Kusadasi lies on the western, Aegean, coast of Turkey, close to the ancient city of Ephesus and the island of Samos. The climate is typically Mediterranean, ranging from around 13-15ºC in winter to upwards of 30ºC in summer. Turkey's coastal waters gave us the word 'Turquoise' for their glorious colour, and the beaches are excellent.
Turkey has a great many sites of historical interest, some of them dating back thousands of years to the ancient empires of the Hittites and Phrygians. Some sites are quite rugged, so sensible footwear is a good idea if you plan to visit the ruins. Many mosques also have a long history and are well worth a look, though appropriate courtesy is required. Visitors should avoid entering mosques during prayer time and ensure they are suitably dressed. Shoes should be removed and women should cover their hair and arms. Shorts and short skirts are also inappropriate.
Kusadasi has several good beaches, some served by beach clubs that offer drinks, music and entertainment close to the sands. The water temperature can reach 21ºC or more in summer.
Accommodation and Food
Accommodation in Kusadasi ranges from 5-star luxury hotels to more modest establishments. Holiday villages of apartments and studios are also available. Half-board includes meals in restaurants within the complex, and there are other facilities, including in some cases a children's area, health club and watersports.
The resort features a wide range of restaurants serving international cuisine as well as more traditional Turkish dishes. Seafood is also popular. There is enough variety to suit any budget.
Activities
Go shopping! Kusadasi has over 1000 shops open all day every day. Buying is an experience in its own right; the locals love to haggle and buyers are often offered a drink during the proceedings.
If the shops wear you out, relaxing on the beach is just the thing. The area has many excellent beaches close to Kusadasi and farther afield. For the more active visitor there are watersports including diving. Water lovers can also visit Kusadasi's three waterparks.
Boat trips to the small bays north of Kusadasi leave daily from the Marina. The tour includes an excellent lunch aboard the boat. Other daily trips include tours of the local sights – the incredibly well preserved ancient city Ephesus, the natural; wonder of Pamukkle, or a guided tour of local historical sites.
Alternatively, you can explore on your own. The region has a wealth of fortresses, mosques and temples to visit. Some of them are famous, some less so, and some are counted among the wonders of the ancient world!
Not far from Kusadasi lies the town of Didim, which dates from 300BC. Here, visitors can see the Temple of Apollo. This was once the home of an oracle famed throughout the Mediterranean and retains much of its ancient wonder.
For something a little more unusual, jeep and horseback safaris are available. Upon your return, immerse yourself in Turkish culture at the Turkish Nights show, with traditional music and cuisine – and belly dancers.
