California lies on the western coast of the United States of America, with a long Pacific coastline. The climate is warm and sunny and the beaches are great – everyone knows that California is famous for surfing and beach fun.

The capital of California is Sacramento, with a population of about 450,000. The state is divided into several distinct regions:

The Shasta Cascade is a beautiful region of mountains and forests. It is popular mainly with outdoor enthusiasts and those seeking a quite vacation away from it all.

The North Coast is a land of redwood trees and vineyards. The region contains three national parks and plenty of open space for camping, hiking and outdoor pursuits.

San Francisco and the Bay Area are dominated by the spectacular San Francisco skyline. The large and bustling city is surrounded by wineries and breathtaking scenery.

The Central Coast area lies between San Francisco and Los Angeles. There are several good resorts along the coast, which is a tranquil and quiet contrast to the big cities on either side.

Los Angeles County , forming part of California's South Coast regionis quite mountainous, with excellent beaches. As well as the obvious attractions of Los Angeles itself, the region is popular with golfers, skiers and deep-sea fishing fans.

Orange County and San Diego County are a continuation of the south coast, with splendid countryside and excellent beaches. Orange County contains the world-famous Disneyland theme park as well as Legoland California.

Central Valley is a fertile area that is more famous for agriculture than tourism. Its main feature is the Delta, a huge waterway fed by five rivers.

Gold Country was opened up by the 1849 Gold Rush, and still shows many signs of those frontier boom days. It is also the site of the state capital, Sacramento.

The High Sierra backs onto the Sierra Nevada mountains, with gorgeous lakes and spectacular skylines. The region contains three national parks and is popular with outdoor enthusiasts.

The Desert is beautiful in its own harsh way, and is home to some fine resorts.

Things to Do

Los Angeles is one of the most famous cities in the world. As well as a huge range of museums and theatres the city boasts some excellent beaches with 330 sunny days a year. There is also Hollywood to explore. See the mansions of the great movie stars and the Walk of Fame on Hollywood Boulevard.

The Palm Springs areais essentially a complex of eight resort cities – Cathedral City, Desert Hot Springs, Indian Wells, Indio, La Quinta, Palm Desert, Ranch Mirage as well as Pal Springs itself. Surrounded by mountains and with many excellent golf courses, Palm Springs offers a range of recreational activities.

You can take a tour of the surrounding canyons in an offroad vehicle or even a covered wagon. Another way to see the scenery is to take to the air – hot air balloon trips run throughout the year.

If you like sport there are professional tennis and gold events to watch, and if the arts are more your style then you can find major jazz, art and film festivals.

The nightlife is very varied, ranging from the usual dance clubs to Jazz clubs, piano bars and plenty of restaurants.

In Sacramento with its pleasant Mediterranean climate you can discover the way of life of the original settlers during the great Gold Rush. Fans of the great outdoors will find plenty of fishing, camping, horseback riding, whitewater rafting and hiking opportunities, or you could try your hand at panning for gold.

If you like sport, Sacramento has 30 golf courses and over two hundred tennis courts, or you can relax and watch a game of basketball or baseball.

The city has over 40 art galleries and excellent theatres offering everything from plays to ballet and opera. Historical attractions include a Gold Rush era Historic Park plus museums dedicated to subjects as diverse as art, railroading, state history and the native peoples.

San Francisco is a culturally diverse city with some of the world's great landmarks. Located between the Pacific Ocean and the hills inland, San Francisco is a very beautiful city. You can take a trip to Alcatraz, the world's most famous prison or see the amazing Golden Gate Bridge.

Santa Barbara, located 150km north of Los Angeles, lies between the ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains. The area has an almost tropical climate which lends itself to some excellent wineries in the area. There are plenty of outdoor activities on offer as well as theatre and dining in Mediterranean-style inns.

All of California is good for surfing, but the best can be found between Santa Cruz and Ventura. You can also charter a boat for fishing or pleasure cruising and enjoy the wonderful climate from the deck of your own vessel. The entire coast is good for watersports too. Some of the best diving experiences are to be had in Monterey Bay with its submarine canyon. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is well worth a visit too.

California's mountains are also home to some great skiing resorts. The ski season lasts all winter and sometimes into summer depending on snowfall. The ski resorts offer a range of additional activities including rides in snowmobiles, sleighs, and hot air balloons. Or you can take a paddleboat cruise on the beautiful Lake Tahoe. In the evenings you will be entertained by cabaret and live jazz or blues. Ski and Surf holidays offer a week in the snow and a week at the sunny coast.

And of course there is Disneyland, one of the most famous theme parks in the world. In truth Disneyland is more than that, with shops and hotels and many attractions to keep visitors amused for their entire stay.
