Hawaii is a state of the United States of America lying thousands of kilometres from the mainland in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Hawaii consists of a chain of islands created by volcanic activity that still goes on today.
The climate is mild all year round, with moderate humidity and considerable variations in rainfall even over short distances. Storms are rare but they do happen and can be severe. Summer runs from May to October, winter from October to April. There is not very much variation in temperature between the seasons.
The islands are mountainous and thousands of kilometers from the nearest major land mass. This has an effect on the local climate and accounts for much of the variation within the island group.
The state of Hawaii is made up of several islands, of which the largest is also called Hawaii. It is the most recently formed of the islands with terrain ranging from temperate to tropical forest. The west coast (Kohala Coast) is sunny and dry, and is home to most of the island's resorts. The centre of the island is dominated by 500m mountains.
Maui is a fertile and lush island dominated by two huge dormant volcanoes. One of them, Mount Haleakala, is the largest dormant volcano in the world. The view from the summit crater is incredible. The southern shore is home to several beach resorts. Kapalua Bay is said to be the best beach in the United States.
Kauai is a very beautiful island and is known as the Garden Isle. It has 43 beaches of beautiful white sand and many species of unique flowers.
Lana'i has two 5-star resorts and is one of the world's best centres for scuba diving. The coastal waters are home to many dolphins and are exceptionally clear. The island also has two excellent golf courses.
Moloka'i has been inhabited for about 1500 years but was not discovered by Europeans until the late 1770s. The island is quiet and peaceful, with little nightlife but plenty of natural beauty. There are great beaches and wonderful scenery to be viewed from the mountain heights. The stars are incredibly clear at night. On the north side of the island are some of the world's highest sea cliffs, where waterfalls plunge to the ocean below. In the west is a fertile plan dotted with historic remains of the native Hawaiians and early Christian missionaries to the islands.
Oahu is one of the most popular of the Hawaiian islands for visitors. It is also the site of the capital, Honolulu. Honolulu is a city of about 400,000 inhabitants and is the only really large settlement in the islands. The resort of Waikiki, not far from Honolulu, is considered to be one of the best in the world.
Just along the coast from Waikiki is Hanauma Bay, an excellent snorkling location. The bay was once a volcanic crater and is now a protected nature reserve where you can encounter goatfish, sea turtles and parrotfish, many of which are quite friendly.
Things to Do
Volcanoes National Park on Hawaii has been described as 'the most spectacular show on earth). You can take a helicopter ride over the spectacular, active volcanic landscape. Elsewhere on Hawaii there are traditional Japanese gardens at Lili'uokalani Gardens
Go whale-watching from Lahaina Town on Maui, which was once a centre of the Pacific whaling industry, or visit the Marine Wildlife Reserve Islet at Molokini. If you prefer to stay on dry land, you can play golf on one of the world-famous courses of Maui or Lana'i, set against the backdrop of the most beautiful island in the Pacific.
You could also climb to the top of Mount Haleakala on Maui and see the world's largest dormant volcanic crater close up. The volcanic landscape in the crater is very alien. You can explore or take a guided tour with a park ranger who will explain the area's culture and natural history.
Discover the unique biosphere of Hawaii at the National Tropical Botanical Gardens on Kauai. You may need to book in advance however as the gardens are very popular. Or to see nature close up for yourself, take a hike along the Kalalau trail. Park Rangers are on hand to advise you and ensure you are properly equipped for the hike, which will take you past some of the most beautiful scenery in the Pacific.
The Kamakou Preserve on Moloka'i offers kayaking, cycling and horse (and mule) riding through the lush countryside. There you will see many rare Hawaiian animals and plants in the wild.
On Oahu, there are many sporting activities on offer. The island has what may be the best surf in the world and offers a range of other watersports too. In addition there is horse riding, cycling and hiking in the island's beautiful interior. The capital also has some great shopping and dining opportunities.
Oahu is dominated by the extinct volcano Diamond Head. You can hike to the top and enjoy the unbelievable view. The ascent is quite hard work and will require a torch as there are several tunnels on the route. Sensible walking shoes are a must.
At Waikiki, submarine excursions are on offer. You can see the wonderful array of Hawaiian marine life without getting wet, or take a boat and go whale watching. There is also the Sea Life Park and the Hanauma Bay Marine Nature Reserve to explore.
At Honolulu, you can visit the Arizona Memorial, dedicated to those who lost their lives in the attack on Pearl Harbour naval base in 1941, or tour the battleship USS Missouri where she lies ay anchor.
