New York City lies on the eastern coast of the United States of America, at the mouth of the Hudson River. The city, which is home to about seven and a half million people, is divided into five boroughs, each of which is also a county.

Brooklyn (Kings County) forms half of Long Island. The largest of the boroughs in the city, Brooklyn was settled by the Dutch in 1636 and became part of New York City in 1898. Gradually British settlers joined the community and Brooklyn eventually became part of New York City in 1833.

Queens , named for the wife of Charles II of England,is the other half of Long Island. The area was not greatly settled until the mid 19 th Century when large numbers of immigrants arrived looking for a home. The region became part of the city in 1898 and grew rapidly.

Today Queens is divided into neighborhoods, each with a strong ethnic identity. Queens is the site of both of New York's international airports and much of the city's industry.

Staten Island (Richmond County) is an island in its own right, which was offered by the Duke of York as the prize in a sailing race in 1687. The race was won by a team from Manhattan. Staten Island was not developed until the mainland became more accessible due to a reliable ferry and the Verrazano-Narrows bridge.

Manhattan is also an island, which was bought by Dutch settlers from its native inhabitants for $24 worth of trade goods. In 1624 the town of New Amsterdam was built on the island; this was the beginning of the city that became New York. The English later captured the island and renamed it.

About a quarter of Manhattan Island is landfill. The remainder is largely granite, and it is on this hard foundation that the tallest buildings are constructed. The softer areas such as Greenwich Village and Chelsea tend to have lower structures.

The Bronx lies on the mainland. It is named for Jonas Bronck, who built a farm there in 1636 and was the first settler. The large influx of Italian and Irish settlers who arrived in the 19 th and 20 th Centuries expanded the Bronx to its present size. Immigrants still come to live in the Bronx, but today they are more likely to be of Russian or Hispanic origin. The two most famous landmarks in New York (Bronx Zoo and Yankee Stadium) are located in The Bronx.

There is another area within New York City with its own identity – the United Nations. The 6-block area along the East River is in fact an international territory belonging to all member countries of the United Nations.

Things To Do

No visit to New York would be complete without a visit to the Empire State Building. Built in 1931, the 500m tall skyscraper is probably the best-known landmark in the city. An average of three and a half million people per year take in the view from the observatories atop this most famous of buildings.

The Statue of Liberty (actually named 'Enlightening the World') on Liberty Island stands 50m tall and was built in 1886. Visits are popular – so popular that if you plan to climb the internal staircase to the top, arriving early is a must.

Central Park is another famous attraction. It is somewhat larger than the Principality of Monaco, and is a popular place to escape the bustle of New York life.

The Intrepid Museum, housed aboard the decommissioned aircraft carrier USS Intrepid, is dedicated to the military and to space exploration. It has examples of many kinds of aircraft and other military equipment including a nuclear missile.

The Rose Centre for Earth and Space has an advanced planetarium displaying Space Shows that realistically re-create the first few minutes of the origins of the universe as well as exhibits showing how our universe developed and Earth's place in it.

The Metropolitan Museum is an incredible collection of exhibits covering the history of humanity form ancient Egypt to modern times. It will reward more than one visit as there is simply so much to see. The American Museum of Natural History is not only an attractive building in its own right but an amazing collection of exhibits, many of which are interactive.
