Holidays in Orlando
USA Main Guide | Florida Main Guide
Orlando is located in the peninsula of Florida, slightly closer to the eastern, Atlantic, coast than the western side. The city is roughly in the centre of the state and is well positioned to act as a base for exploring the whole of Florida. Even the Florida Keys at the southern tip of the peninsula are only 600km away.
Orlando has a population of about 1.5 million permanent residents and attracts about 40 million tourists a year. It is probably the most famous city in Florida (Miami might dispute that) and has many excellent attractions.
Accommodation and Food
Orlando has no shortage of accommodation. Many of the 'flagship' hotels are involved in packages that will give you free transfers to certain attractions or the start points of various tours and excursions. Alternatively, there is increasing demand for home-rentals. Essentially, instead of staying at a hotel you rent a 3-7 bedroom house or luxury property for the duration of your stay. Most of these properties have their own swimming pool.
There is also the world-famous Walt Disney World. More than a theme park, Disney World is a resort in its own right, with several hotels within. The park has its own internal transport system included in the cost of staying there.
Orlando has a vast range of eating places ranging from fairly modest to incredibly luxurious. International cuisine is widely available, but quintessentially 'American' dishes such as surf 'n' turf and frighteningly large steaks are always popular. If you're hungry and on a budget then perhaps an all-you-can-eat buffet might be the way to go.
Activities
Disney World is the big attraction, of course. The enormous resort is located very close to Orlando and is easy to reach. There is far more than can be seen in a single day: two water parks, the Animal Kingdom theme park, the Wide World of Sports complex, the Magic Kingdom plus shopping in Downtown Disney. Many visitors go to Disney World for their entire holiday.
Outside Disney World, there is still plenty to do. There is the Kennedy Space Centre with its 3D IMAX cinema recreations of great space missions such as the Apollo Moon launches and a taste of the future of space exploration. At the other end of the scale, the Holy Land Experience is a 'living Bible' recreating ancient Jerusalem. The Titanic Exhibition is dedicated to the world's most famous shipping disaster and puts a human face on the tragedy.
If aircraft are your thing then you might like to visit Warbird Adventures at Kissimmee. There you can take a flight in a World War II-era trainer aircraft. Choose between a sightseeing flight or something more extreme including aerobatics. Wonderworks is more than worth a look, too. It is an interactive facility with many optical and visual oddities, plus the chance to play laser tag.
